In February 2023, Nettavisen published an opinion piece written by attorney Servet Yildiz Stêrk, in which he urged Norwegian authorities to temporarily ease visa requirements for survivors of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
In the piece, Stêrk described how, as a lawyer, he had received many inquiries from Norwegian citizens who wanted to assist their earthquake-affected family members by offering them temporary shelter in Norway. However, he pointed out that the strict visa requirements for citizens of these countries posed a significant barrier to this type of humanitarian aid.
"This is a time when we all must come together and help one another. It is time for Norwegian authorities to show solidarity with the earthquake victims and make it easier for them to reunite with their loved ones in Norway," Stêrk wrote in the piece.
He referred to the German authorities, who had already declared that they would ease visa requirements for earthquake survivors, and encouraged Norway to follow this example. Stêrk also highlighted that many victims of the disaster had lost everything, including travel documents, and that it was important not to place unnecessary obstacles in their path.
In conclusion, he expressed hope that Norwegian authorities would act quickly to provide earthquake victims with the assistance they needed, just as was done for the victims of the war in Ukraine.
