In June 2022, Nettavisen reported on the case of Norwegian-Turkish Eylem Güler, who cannot travel to Turkey because she risks being arrested at the airport during border crossing. The reason is a Facebook post she allegedly shared in 2016, according to Turkish authorities, which criticized President Erdoğan.

Attorney Servet Yildiz Stêrk from the law firm Tveter and Kløvfjell, who assists Güler in the case, issued a strong warning to Norwegians who criticize Erdoğan and Turkey's policies in social media comment sections.

"Norwegians traveling to Turkey must be aware that the Turkish 'democracy' is a shell for an authoritarian regime without freedom of speech, where even Norwegians risk prosecution for expressing negative opinions about the Turkish president," Stêrk stated to Nettavisen.

In the article, Stêrk pointed out that the penalty for insulting the president in the Turkish penal code is imprisonment for 1 to 4 years, with the possibility of extension. According to official legal statistics, over 160,000 people have been charged with presidential insults during Erdoğan's presidency.

Stêrk emphasized that although Turkish-speaking individuals are primarily under scrutiny, anyone can be exposed: "With the development of translation features integrated into various social media platforms, everyone is equally visible," he warned.

Nettavisen also reported on how the Turkish embassy in Oslo accused Stêrk of participating in a "smear campaign against Turkey" due to his involvement in public demonstrations against the embassy, linking the case to his own commitment to human rights in Turkey.
