In November 2021, AdvokatWatch reported how Servet Yildiz Stêrk experienced harassment on social media after participating in an action outside the Turkish Embassy in Oslo.
The action was organized by the Norwegian Bar Association’s Human Rights Committee in solidarity with the prosecuted lawyers Barkin Timtik and Selcuk Kozagacli, whose trial began in Istanbul the same week. The demonstration was part of a coordinated European effort to protest against the persecution of lawyers, judges, journalists, and human rights defenders in Turkey.
Stêrk, who has a Kurdish background and came to Norway as a young boy, was one of the few members of the legal profession who participated in the demonstration. After sharing images from the action on Instagram, he received threats and harassment, including accusations of being a "traitor".
As a result of the incident, Stêrk expressed concern about possible prosecution in Turkey. With his dual citizenship, he feared that he would not receive a fair trial if charges were brought against him.
Members of the Norwegian Bar Association’s Human Rights Committee, Else Leona McClimans and Maria Hessen Jacobsen, described the harassment as "outrageous" and praised Stêrk’s courage for participating in the action despite the personal risk involved.
